Important LAS News

Since the beginning, the Canadian Well Logging Society (CWLA) website has been the official home of LAS (Log ASCII Standard). There you could find the 2.0 and 3.0 version specifications as downloadable PDFs. Recently I noticed the site at www.cwls.org was down, so I checked in with Casey Struyk, who created the 2.0 standard. Here's what he said:

The CWLS was merged into the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists (CSPG) who then changed their name to Canadian Energy Geoscience Association (CEGA) and has a website at https://cegageos.ca.

At the moment the CEGA site does not have any information about LAS, but that may change in the future. If you have LAS Explorer installed, you can easily access the 2.0 standard PDF, as it is installed with the application. The file name is "Las2_Update_Feb2017.pdf". Of course that is the February 2017 version of the standard, which was the latest version on the CWLA website before it went down. You can access this file from within the application, from the Help menu.

Casey is retired but you can still download his LasApps software from his website at https://kcpetrophysics.mynucleus.ca. In fact he now graciously makes the pro version free to everyone.

If there is a feature in LasApps that is not in LAS Explorer and you need it, please let us know.
